Abdullah ibn Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

«مَنْ قَتَلَ مُعَاهَدًا لَمْ يَرَحْ رَائِحَةَ الْجَنَّةِ، وَإِنَّ رِيحَهَا تُوجَدُ مِنْ مَسِيرَةِ أَرْبَعِينَ عَامًا»

English meaning:

“Whoever kills a person protected by a treaty will not smell the fragrance of Paradise, although its fragrance can be perceived from forty years’ journey away.”

Explanation of the Hadith

In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gives a severe warning against killing a mu‘ahid: a non-Muslim whose life is protected by a covenant or treaty with Muslims.

The protection granted through that agreement must be respected. A difference in religion does not permit a Muslim to betray the covenant or unlawfully take the protected person’s life.

The words “will not smell the fragrance of Paradise” emphasize the gravity of this crime. The hadith describes Paradise’s fragrance as reaching an immense distance, yet warns the offender of being deprived even of that fragrance. This is a serious warning against a major sin, rather than permission for us to declare the final fate of a particular person. Judgment belongs to Allah.

What This Hadith Teaches Us

Human life must be protected. The hadith specifically safeguards the life of a non-Muslim under a covenant, showing that religious difference does not remove that protection.

Agreements must be honored. A pledge of peace or security is a responsibility before Allah. It must never be used to create a false sense of safety before committing betrayal.

Mercy includes people outside our own community. As Muslims, we must respect the rights of those who do not share our faith. Justice and protection cannot depend only on religious belonging.

Anger does not excuse wrongdoing. Hostility or disagreement does not give individuals permission to violate a covenant or harm someone protected by it.

Putting the Lesson into Practice

This hadith directly addresses the unlawful killing of a person protected by a covenant. Its emphasis on protection and faithfulness also reminds us to take our everyday responsibilities seriously: keep our promises, respect others’ rights, and behave in ways that help people feel safe.

As Muslims, we should reflect the mercy of our faith through trustworthy conduct and respect for human life.

May Allah help us honor our agreements, uphold justice, and follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Ameen.
