How to Perform Wudu Correctly According to the Qur’an and Sunnah
Introduction
Wudu (ablution) is an essential act of purification in Islam. Muslims perform wudu before Salah (prayer) to prepare themselves for standing before Allah in a state of ritual purity. Beyond its physical aspects, wudu reminds Muslims of the importance of cleanliness, discipline, and spiritual preparation.
Whether you are a new Muslim, teaching your children about Islam, or looking to refresh your knowledge, this guide explains the meaning of wudu, how to perform it, and what every Muslim should know about it.
What Is Wudu?
Wudu is the prescribed ritual washing of specific parts of the body before certain acts of worship, especially Salah. Allah describes the essential steps of wudu in the Qur’an:
“O you who believe! When you rise to perform prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles.” (Qur’an 5:6, translation of the meaning)
Wudu is not simply about physical cleanliness. It is also an act of worship performed in obedience to Allah.
How to Perform Wudu Step by Step

Follow these steps to perform wudu:
1. Make the intention (Niyyah)
Intend in your heart to perform wudu for the sake of Allah. The intention does not need to be spoken aloud.
2. Say “Bismillah”
Begin by saying “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah). Scholars differ about the ruling on saying it before wudu, so Muslims should follow reliable guidance from their school of Islamic law.
3. Wash your hands
Wash both hands up to the wrists three times, making sure water reaches between the fingers.
4. Rinse your mouth
Take water into your mouth, rinse it, and spit it out. Repeat three times.
5. Clean your nose
Gently draw water into your nose and blow it out. Repeat three times.
6. Wash your face
Wash the entire face from the hairline to the chin and from ear to ear. Repeat three times.
7. Wash your arms
Wash the right arm, including the hand, up to and including the elbow, then wash the left arm in the same way. Repeat three times for each arm.
8. Wipe your head
Wipe your head with wet hands. The exact extent of the head that must be wiped differs among the recognized schools of Islamic law.
9. Wipe your ears
Wiping the ears is part of the commonly taught Sunnah method of wudu.
10. Wash your feet
Wash the right foot up to and including the ankle, then the left foot. Repeat three times for each foot, ensuring that water reaches between the toes and around the heels.
Washing each part three times is a recommended Sunnah practice in the commonly taught method; washing it once thoroughly can fulfill the washing requirement. Avoid wasting water.
What Breaks Wudu?

Commonly recognized things that invalidate wudu include:
- Urinating or passing stool.
- Passing wind.
- Deep sleep in which a person loses awareness, according to the applicable legal details.
- Losing consciousness.
- Other matters that vary among Islamic schools, including certain forms of direct contact with the opposite sex and touching the private parts.
Because some details differ among the recognized schools of Islamic law, consult a knowledgeable scholar or a reliable source that follows your school of practice when a particular situation is unclear.
Does Wudu Need to Be Repeated Before Every Prayer?
No. If you have performed valid wudu and nothing has happened to invalidate it, you may pray multiple prayers with the same wudu. You do not have to repeat wudu before every prayer simply because time has passed.
The Benefits and Wisdom of Wudu
Wudu teaches Muslims to maintain cleanliness and prepare for worship. It encourages mindfulness, regular personal hygiene, and obedience to Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that purification is an important part of faith.
Muslims should perform wudu calmly and carefully, without unnecessary hardship or wasting water.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I perform wudu while wearing socks?
In certain circumstances, Muslims may wipe over qualifying footwear instead of washing their feet. The conditions depend on the type of footwear, how it was put on, and the relevant school of Islamic law.
Can I speak while performing wudu?
Yes. Ordinary conversation does not invalidate wudu, although focusing on the act of worship is preferable.
Is wudu valid if I forget to say Bismillah?
The ruling differs among scholars. Forgetting it does not invalidate wudu according to many scholars, while others place greater emphasis on saying it. Follow trusted guidance from your school of practice.
Can I perform wudu using very little water?
Yes. Wudu requires water to reach the required body parts, not excessive amounts of water. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged moderation in its use.
Conclusion
Wudu is a fundamental practice in a Muslim’s daily life. By learning its steps and understanding its purpose, Muslims can approach Salah with greater confidence and awareness. Teach children to perform wudu gently and correctly, and remember that Islam encourages both purification and moderation.
May Allah grant us purity, sincerity, and consistency in worship. Ameen.
